Public Transportation - Bermuda

By , About.com Guide

Renting a car in Bermuda is not an option so we have to rely on other means of getting around. The most obvious and most efficient way is via public transportation and Bermuda has one of the best systems I've come across. Through a very frequent bus schedule and a not quite so frequent ferry system, they seem to have all the bases covered.

Buses

Buses run every 20 minutes, or so, from and to all parts of the island, stopping off along the way at all the major attractions, resorts and, especially as far as we are concerned, golf courses.

The fleet of attractive, comfortable pink and white buses can be seen everywhere. All you need do is stand by one of pink or blue poles and wave as the bus approaches. The poles are placed every half-mile, or so, on either side of the road for access to and from Hamilton and all points in between.

Note: poles with a pink section at the top indicate that the buses are inward-bound toward Hamilton, and those with blue sections are outward bound. Bus and ferry schedules are available at all hotels and many restaurants and attractions.

Ferries

There's nothing quite like a boat ride on a warm, sunny day, especially in Bermuda. Ferries run between Hamilton and Paget, Warwick, Somerset and the Royal Naval Dockyard. The ride takes about 30 and you can travel out via ferry and back by bus all on the same transportation pass.

Ferry boats leave the dock on Front Street in Hamilton every 30 to 45 minutes. If you're renting a scooter, you can take it on board with you and spend the day sightseeing, then return by road.

Public Transportation passes can be obtained for a day, 3 days or for a week. The cost runs from $5 to $30 and they are good for unlimited rides on the bus or ferries. They can be obtained at any of the several Tourist Information Offices in and around Hamilton.
