RockResorts, Vail, CO is a collection of luxury resorts in stunning natural locations across the U.S. Caribbean and Mexico owned by Vail Resorts of Vail, Colorado. The resort hotels, more than a dozen of them, feature award-winning dining, state-of-the-art RockResorts Spas and fitness centers, world-renowned golf courses and a variety of outdoor activities ranging from skiing and sleigh rides in winter to fly fishing and golf in summer. Each property incorporates a flavor indigenous to its own unique location with a strong connection to the natural habitat.

History: RockResorts was originally created in 1956 by Laurance S. Rockefeller, with the development of Caneel Bay on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Other resorts were added to the brand, including Little Dix on Virgin Gorda, The Lodge at Koele, Manele Bay on the Hawaiian island of Lanai, The Mauna Kea on the Big Island, Kapalua Bay Hotel on Maui, the Grand Teton Lodge Company in Wyoming and several more. The Rockefeller family sold the brand in 1986 and it remained dormant until it was acquired by Vail Resorts, Inc., and re-launched as a luxury destination brand in late 2001.

The RockResorts Golf Trail:

The RockResorts Golf Trail is a chain of six championship golf courses attached to five Rocky Mountain resorts and centered on Vail, Colorado, five of the courses within 30 miles of the village. I have visited five of the six and, if you’re looking for something special, I urge you to give them a try. As we all know, Vail is all about skiing and probably the last place to come to mind when one is looking for the perfect spot for a golf vacation.

True, the season is short (mid-May through the second week in October) but I have yet to visit a more beautiful setting. The courses on the RockResort Golf Trail were designed by some of the biggest names in the industry – Norman, Fazio, Robert Trent Jones Jr., etc., and feature some of the most spectacular holes of golf I’ve ever seen. Better yet, the ball flies father at 8,000 feet than it does at sea level – it’s true, really. So, if you’re looking for a golfing challenge with a difference, this is it.

The Golf Courses:

  • The River Course at Keystone (Hurdzan-Fry)
  • Keystone Ranch Golf Course (Robert Trent Jones Jr.
  • Beaver Creek Golf Course (Robert Trent Jones Jr.)
  • Red Sky Golf Club (Tom Fazio Course)
  • Red Sky Golf Club (Greg Norman Course)
  • Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club (Robert Trent Jones Jr.)

How to Get There:

The best option, in my opinion, is to fly into Denver International Airport, then rent a car and drive over to Vail. It should take no more than a couple of hours and the scenery along the way is spectacular.
