St. Johns Golf and Country Club in St. Augustine, is a Clyde Johnston design (many people claim it’s one of his best) and part of the vast St. Joe real estate empire in Northern Florida. Carved from an old-growth pine forest, natural wetlands and lagoons, the course at St. Johns Golf and Country Club can be very tough when the wind blow – and it does blow, often – especially when you play it from the back tees. The greens are large - some of them are two-tiered – and at times very fast. Johnson, in order to make the course enjoyable for all-comers, no matter what their handicap might be, has provided six sets of tees thus the course varies in length from a monster at 7,236 yards down to a pussy cat of less than 2,400 yards.
Amenities at St. Johns Golf and Country Club include Club Car electric carts with color graphic GPS (Global Positioning System), bag protectors, and windshields. The practice facilities & St. Joe Golf Academy, include a 10,000 square foot putting green, a separate chipping green, a double sided driving range and practice bunkers. In the words of Clyde Johnston, architect of St. Johns Golf & Country Club, "The property was an architect's dream. St. Johns was a wonderful site to build a golf course, with the thick pine forest and unique features, combined with the natural wetlands and native foliage. It allowed me to create a layout with a beautiful environmental setting that I am sure will please any player."
The 18-hole St. Johns plays a whopping 7,236 yards from the back tees for a par of 72, a course rating of 75.3 with a slope of 142 on Bermuda grass. Designed by Clyde B. Johnston, the St. Johns golf course first opened for play in 2001.
