The Independence course at Ginn Reunion was the first of the resort’s courses to open. It was also Tom Watson's first Signature design in Florida. The Independence Course is a windswept, link-style layout of rolling grassy dunes and fairways bounded with more than a dozen 15 varieties of native grasses, azaleas, hibiscus, camellias, and other foliage. Watson says that "Golf attracts more players than any other outdoor sport. No doubt there are almost as many reasons for this as there are players, but one reason is certainly shared by all. It's the simple pleasure of being on a beautiful course."

You know, that’s a sentiment I’ve always held to be true. There really is nothing quite like standing on the first tee on a misty fall morning to set the juices flowing. The Independence is certainly beautiful, but it's also a challenging course. Watson's creative use of bunkers will make you think before you grab your driver, go for the green, or even lay-up. Just look at the bunkers in the image you see above. And the greens? Well, like all Florida greens the speed changes with season, weather and even the heat of the day. They, too, are thought provoking, and certainly challenging. Watson’s Ginn Reunion Independence Course in a credit to him.

Course Specifications:

Ginn Reunion’s Independence was designed and built by Tom Watson – it was his first “signature design” in Florida. The 18-hole, par 72 course plays 7,257 yards off the Champion tees. It can be an extremely tough course, but with five sets of tees you have the option to shorten the layout considerably and thus give yourself the option to score well. Having said that, the Independence requires a solid short game and a real flair for club selection, from putter to lob wedge to three-wood.
