A Review of The Island Golf Course at Innis
The Island Golf Course at Innisbrook, 18 Holes 7,310 Yards Par 71

By , About.com Guide

The Island Golf Course at Innisbrook with its tight fairways, intimidating water hazards and endless bunkers is, in my opinion, no less demanding than the Copperhead. The newly renovated and lengthened Island Golf Course has played host to numerous U.S. Open qualifiers, NCAA Championships and has been ranked among the country's top 50 resort courses by Golf Digest and No. 14 in Travel & Leisure Golf's "Fifty Finest in Florida." It’s a long, and very tough, par 71 course that will really test your metal.

The Island's first six holes are all about beautiful Lake Innisbrook which borders the fairways and greens, and the lateral water hazards require pinpoint accuracy on tee shots and approaches to the greens. Holes seven through 12 feature rolling hills, big cypress and old-growth pine, while holes 13 through 18 meander through an ever-changing terrain and are designed to tempt you to take risks: if you fail…. The 18th is a finishing hole that’s beaten many of the world’s most skilled players and is one of the most photographed finishing holes in Florida.

Course Specifications:

Designed and built by Lawrence Packard, the 18-hole, par 71 Island course plays a whopping 7,310 yards off the Champion, Black tees for a course rating of 76.4 and a slope of 143. With four sets of tees to make play enjoyable to players of all levels of skill, however, low scores are achievable (so they say), especially from the much shorter White tees where the course plays just 6,225 yards, though still maintaining its par of 71.

Rates and Information:

  • Green fees: From $130 to $220 depending upon the time of year and day of week.

Where to Stay:

Of course, I suggest you stay at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club. The amenities they offer mean you’ll have everything close at hand to ensure an enjoyable outing.

How to get There:

The closest regional airport is Tampa International Airport. The airport is served by all major US airlines, including United, Delta, Continental, US Air, AirTran, American, and Northwest.

Look for the best airline and car rental deals with these two aggregators, which provide travelers with an up-to-date search tool to compare prices on airfares and car rentals of all ratings:

Central Florida offers an amazing diversity of golf courses and resorts to choose from. This is one I can personally recommend.
