The Augusta Canal is the nation's only industrial power canal still in use for its original purpose. Built in 1845 to harness the water and power of the Savannah River, the Augusta Canal offers history, recreation and unique experiences along its 8.5 miles of towpath and waterway.

You can explore the Augusta Canal on foot, by bicycle, canoe or kayak. Fish from the banks, watch for wildlife or relax on a guided tour aboard a replica canal cargo boat.

You'll encounter the people who built the canal and learn about the progress, problems and promise of its century-and-a-half history at the Augusta Canal Interpretive Center at Enterprise Mill.

Take a canal boat ride and float past more than 200 years of history and watch the wildlife that calls the canal banks and its waters home. Listen as you Petersburg boat captain and guide shares the local law and legend.

Finally, when the boat ride is over, visit the Augusta Canal Interpretive Center where local history comes to life through award-winning exhibits. It's fun for grown-ups and kids alike. Housed in the picturesque Enterprise Mill in downtown Augusta, on the banks of the canal, the Interpretive Center is open 7 days a week March through November, and Tuesday through Saturday December through February. 706-823-0440.
