On a small corner of paradise, high on a plateau overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Robert Trent Jones Jr., has gone one step beyond and created a true masterpiece. Poipu Bay Golf Course is a stunning layout where golfers of all levels of skill can enjoy breathtaking views and a unique, unforgettable experience.
Poipu Bay is a course unlike any other. Set against a stunning backdrop of tall mountains peaks on the one side, and the rocky cliffs that hold back the Pacific Ocean on the other, it's a lush, green, rolling land that remains much as it must have been when Captain Cook first set foot on these islands in 1778. Here and there you come across the remains of Hawaiian heiau (places of worship) and ancient stone walls, blackened by time and wind. And there are other distractions: nature lovers will not be able to resist the native nene geese, rare Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles and humpback whales. Then, of course, there are the breathtaking views to contend with.
Poipu Bay is a world where Mother Nature reigns supreme. On a mild, sunny day the tees, fairways and greens offer little more than a pleasant walk in the park; true, there’s some challenging golf to play along the way but, depending upon the choice of tee box, the landing areas are often generous, the rough forgiving, and the greens are swift and true. More often than not, however, they lie at the mercy of the wind and can present a range of choices the likes of which you’ve never had to deal with before: a 9-iron where yesterday a 3-iron was needed, perhaps, and so on. Yes, you’ll have plenty of excuses if you don't score well.
Yes, Poipu Bay can be a little daunting. After all, many of the great names of professional golf have fallen by the wayside here. But for you, it’s a dream of a golf course. Memories are, indeed, made of this.
