Review of Oyster Reef Golf Club, Hilton Head Island

By Blair Howard, About.com

The Oyster Reef Golf Club course is the product of renowned golf course architect, Rees Jones. The layout has been voted one of the “Top 20 Golf Courses in the Carolinas,” “Top 75 US Golf Resorts” by Golf Digest, and the “2006 Golf Club of the Year” by the Low Country Golf Course Owners Association. Oyster Reef is a member of “The Heritage Collection on Hilton Head Island,” which is owned and operated by the Heritage Golf Group, a leading owner and operator of golf facilities, including Port Royal Golf Club, Shipyard Golf Club and Palmetto Hall Plantation Club.

Oyster Reef’s 18-hole, championship golf course is spread across 190 acres of some of the most breathtaking real estate in the Carolinas. It’s a supremely quiet world of salt-marsh wetlands, lagoons, lush green fairways, immaculately-manicured greens and spectacular coastal vistas. It’s an unspoiled world where Rees Jones has done little to change the natural environment. He has, however, created a truly remarkable golf course.

This championship layout features a par 72 layout that plays 7,018 yards from the longest of its four sets of tees, and 5,288 yards from the forward tees, which means players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy what might otherwise be a very difficult course. The course rating is 73.7 and the slope is 131. Oyster Reef’s signature hole is the par 3 sixth, an amazingly beautiful hole set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound.
