The Host Hotel
Personally, I cant think of anywhere Id rather play 54 holes of tournament golf than Bermuda, and especially so in March.
Bermudas unique beauty, its elegance and comfortable climate have long been a major attraction for golfers, but its greatest attractions are the courses themselves. There are more golf courses per capita on Bermuda than almost anywhere else in the world, most of them designed by some of the greatest names in golf course architecture. Between them they offer an unbelievable range of challenges. Take into account the benevolent climate and its no wonder that T+L decided upon Bermuda as the venue for this event.
The host hotel will be Mandarin Orientals Elbow Beach. Set upon a private, pristine shore with more than a half-mile of pink sand beach and some 50 acres of landscaped gardens, the luxury hotel is only five minutes from historic downtown Hamilton, the islands capital.
Its always important to those of us who play the game, especially when we attend an event such as this one, that our partners are properly catered to as well. So, folks, you can rest easy knowing that your significant other will be well looked after while you are out on the course.
Aside from its magnificent oceanfront, Elbow Beach offers one of finest spas Ive ever attended. Add some tennis, swimming kayaking and scuba diving to the wonderful shopping opportunities in downtown Hamilton and you can be sure that your partner will return home just as happy as you a good score on your part taken for granted, of course.
The Courses
The Mid Ocean Club
The Mid Ocean Club, in picturesque Tucker's Town, is home to one of the worlds greatest golf courses. Built in 1921 by Charles Blair Macdonald and reworked in the 1950s by Robert Trent Jones, the course has hosted some of the worlds most famous personalities, including Babe Ruth, President Eisenhower, Sir Winston Churchill, The Duke of Windsor and George Bush. Golf Digest ranked it the worlds number 45 outside the United States. Mid Ocean plays a scenic 6548 yards off the back tees.
Tuckers Point
Tucker's Point course plays to a somewhat forgiving 6,361 yards and par 70 from the back tees. Compared to the Mid Ocean course where the most dramatic holes follow the shoreline, Tuckers Point is a course where one-leg is both the same will not serve you well. Its hilly, to put it mildly the locals call it "The Goat Hill Course" which means, of course, that youll also enjoy some of best views on the islands.
Belmont Hills
Third on the venue is Belmont Hills. An ingenious course which favors precision over power, it plays a short 6,100 yards. Belmont Hills was completely redesigned in 2002 by Algie Pulley. Faced, not only with the problems of drastic reconstruction but also those of limited space, Pulley has created a diminutive monster, a real test of fortitude where accurate iron play is a necessity.
