Born and bred in England as I was, it will not come as a surprise to you that Scotch whiskey is my spirit of choice. That is, it was until I happened upon Maker's Mark Kentucky bourbon whiskey. Living as I do in w West Tennessee, I am no stranger to American whiskey products, but I have to tell you that I've never liked them. They are, in general, far to harsh for my taste. Give me a nicely aged, single malt Scotch, however, and I'm totally hooked.
I was on a visit to Louisville, to visit Valhalla golf course, when I was introduced to Kentucky's finest - Maker's Mark. In fact, we had dinner in the Maker's Mark Bar & Grill on Fourth Street the first night in town. I was offered a shot of MM, turned up my nose a little, but accepted the drink - wow, what a nice surprise. It was smooth, smelled wonderful and slipped down with an ease I hadn't experienced in many a long year.
An invitation to visit the distillery followed and I accepted. Next day, I took the hour-long drive south from Louisville to Loretto and the distillery. The photos that follow will give you an idea of what you can expect when you visit, and visit you should. It’s an interesting experience, especially if you’ve never seen whisky made before.
