Audubon Park Golf Course is an amazing little executive golf course just 10 minutes from downtown New Orleans. It sits within Audubon Park, next to the world famous Audubon Zoo. Audubon Park actually opened in 1898 and was the site of the 1884 World's Fair - unbelievable. The golf course, always something of an institution in New Orleans, was redesigned in 2001 and it reopened for play in October of 2002. Today, it enjoys a reputation as one of Louisiana's most prestigious golfing destinations. Audubon Park Golf Course is the only public golf course to reopen in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast.
The city's newest golf course combines over one hundred years of history with the latest in golf course design. The Denis Griffiths layout is, as its title suggests, a parkland course with open access to members of the general public: a walking/jogging path surrounds the course, which features beautifully contoured fairways lined with old-growth oak trees, nicely manicured Tif Eagle greens (a real triumph considering the amount of traffic over the course), four lagoons and lovely landscaping. This, my friends, is no “chip-and-putt” layout. It’s a real, though short, golf course in every sense of the word. The 12 par 3s are all unique, and each offers a new challenge all its own. The par 4s vary in length from 282 yards to 360 yards. The two par 5s play 462 and 471 yards respectively – don’t let the yardage fool you, they are true par 5s.
Hours of Operation:
- Tuesday through Sunday: 7 a.m. until dusk
The Golf Course Clubhouse, located within Audubon Park, is a full-service, 5,000-square foot facility complete with dining facilities and pro shop. The clubhouse sits under a stand of old-growth oak trees and its veranda provides a stunning view over the golf course. The Audubon Golf Course Clubhouse is at the end of Golf Club drive on the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line, across from Tulane University and the Audubon Zoo at 6500 Magazine Street between Walnut and Calhoun streets.
