Oak Wing Golf Club is set on what once was England Air Force Base, the one-time home of General Claire Chenault's famous 23rd Fighter Squadron. Oak Wing Golf Club, one of the latest additions to the Louisiana Audubon Golf Trail.

The 18-hole links-style course, designed by architect Jim Lipe, opened for play in 2002. The 7,043-yard layout plays over a pristine, wetland world of Louisiana bayous and lakes. Generous, tree lined fairways lead to large, undulating greens that are tough to read and vary in speed from one to another.

OakWing, despite its friendly appearance, can drag you quickly back to reality; it’s a deceptive layout that will first tempt, and then punish. Many of the holes are doglegs that play either right or left; one or two play both ways. OakWing's back nine is a real challenge, especially when the wind blows, which is often. Easily the toughest hole on the course, the 585-yard par-5 14th requires three solid shots to an undulating green heavily guarded by bunkers to left and right. The second shot is a real tester: the landing area is narrow and protected on both sides by thick rough and four creatively-placed fairway bunkers.

Lipe was quite a player in his time (he won three Louisiana Senior Amateur Championships in 1999, 2000 and 2001), and his skills as such have contributed heavily to his creativity as a designer, and it shows in his signature layout of OakWing’s 14th.

Course Specifications:

OakWing plays 7,043 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 73.7 and the slope is 125 on Bermuda grass. Designed by James W. Lipe, Jr., a one-time member of the famed Jack Nicklaus design team. OakWing opened for play in 2002. Five sets of tees make play enjoyable for players of all levels of skill. Low scores are achievable, especially from the much shorter white tees.

Green Fees:

  • From $19 to $43 depending upon the time of day – Cart is $13 extra.

Where to Stay:

I suggest you try the Parc England, a boutique hotel just two minutes from the airport and OakWing. Compare Prices. It’s conveniently close to the course and the amenities they offer mean you’ll have everything close at hand to ensure an enjoyable outing.

How to get There:

The closest regional airport is Alexandria International Airport. The airport is served by several major US airlines, including Delta, Continental, American, and Northwest.

Look for the best airline and car rental deals with these two aggregators, which provide travelers with an up-to-date search tool to compare prices on airfares and car rentals of all ratings:
