River Bend Links was created through an unusual alliance of three casinos, normally fierce competitors, who saw the need for alternative entertainment for their guests and the public. Casino Strip Resorts - Harrah's, Hollywood, and Sam's Town joined forces to build this links style course, in the Tunica area of Mississippi.
River Bend Links: If you’ve always wondered what it must be like to play one of the links courses in Scotland, or even England, this course will give you an idea. True, the heather, gorse and waving grasslands are missing, but the rolling, wind swept treeless terrain is just what you might expect at Royal Birkdale (home of the 2008 British Open), or even the Ailsa course at Turnberry. Now look, I’m suggesting in any way shape or form that River Bend is in the same class as those two mighty courses. What I am saying is that River Bend is a close to a real links-style course as you’re likely to get in the Southeastern United States.
I visited to River Bend Links in late March. It was a wild time, to say the least. The weather was not at all conducive to golf: rain, wind and soggy ground all made for high scores and a somewhat uncomfortable couple of days. Even so, it was easy to sea that River Bend is an unusual course, and that’s exactly what architect Clyde Johnston was trying to achieve. He describes his River Bend Links course as "a field of dunes.” Clyde has managed to transform this one-time cotton field into a true Scottish links style course. Built on the banks of the Mississippi River, it’s often a wild and remote land where the wildlife indigenous to the area still roam freely over the course. It’s not unusual to run into deer, fox, or wild turkey.
The course plays 6,906 yards off the “Blackjack” tees, for a par of 72. Five sets of tees, all named in gambling terms, provide a range of choices even for golfers not yet skilled at the game. It’s not the most difficult golf course I’ve ever visited, and I do believe it’s one you shouldn’t miss if you’re visiting the casinos in Tunica.
