Caledonia Golf & Fish Club course, a member of the Waccamaw Golf Trail, is located on the site of a former rice plantation bordering the Waccamaw River. Its name, Caledonia, comes from Dr. Robert Nesbit, a Scottish immigrant, the Plantation's original founder. Nesbit acquired the property when he married Elizabeth Pawley, after whose family Pawley's Island is named.
The course is a sheltered world of great natural beauty and home to an extraordinary abundance of wildlife. The course plays deceiving short: 6,526 yards for a par of 70, a course rating of 72 with a slope of 140. Four sets of tees, each marked by replicas of the indigenous waterfowl found around the property, offer a range of options to suite golfers of every level of skill.
The fairways are wide open with more than generous landing areas; the greens are large, undulating, often difficult to read and guarded by sand bunkers. Water is play on three of the 18 holes. The clubhouse is a replica of a colonial plantation house from the 1700's.
Caledonia Golf & Fish Club has been an award winning course since it opened in 1995. Designed by Mike Strantz and built upon the site of a working southern rice plantation, Caledonia has been recognized both for its design and incredible beauty. Named 5th Best New Public Course in America by Golf Digest, and ranked 26th in the "Top 100 You Can Play" by Golf Magazine 2004, one of the "Top 31 Best Upscale Courses in America" the course has also earned a 4 1/2 star rating by Golf Digest 1996 - 2005.
It’s a fun course to play; not too difficult, but challenge enough to provide an enjoyable day out.
