Designed by Carl Olsen, the 7,011-yard golf course at the CasaBlanca Golf Club in Mesquite, Nevada is one of those rare animals in the golfing world we all wish for but almost never can seem to find: it’s a walk-able golf course. Now why would that be important? Well, not only does it offer a rare opportunity to get some real exercise, walking a golf course also means you have time to stop along the way and smell the flowers, enjoy the spectacular views, and observe the abundant of desert wildlife – CasaBlanca is a wildlife sanctuary. And, speaking of spectacular views, the layout at CasaBlanca winds through some of the region’s most stunning natural desert wetlands with views of the surrounding Virgin River Mountains. Water in the desert? Hard to believe, but true; no less than 13 of the 18 holes play either over or around water hazards.

At first glance, the golf course looks deceptively easy; not so. Landing areas that look generous are often tighter than they look with forced carries, waste bunkers and the ever-present cacti. The greens are not just large, undulating and tough to read; most of them are guarded by huge bunkers and grass-covered dunes where cactus is king and wayward golf balls disappear for ever. Astute club selection off the tee to ensure that you hit the fairways, accurate approach shots and a modicum of skill with the sand and pitching wedges are the keys to scoring well at CasaBlanca. As always, though, if you play within your game, which means playing from the correct tee boxes, there’s a good chance you’ll score well; five sets of tees are provided. From the back tees, creatively called the Double Spades, the course plays some 7,036 yards for a par of 72 and course rating of 130. From the blue tees, the Spades, the course plays 6,628 yards; and from the white tees, the Clubs, it plays a very manageable 6,100 yards. So, stay at the Casablanca Resort and Casino and enjoy the walk, or the ride if you so prefer. Either way, you’re sure of a pleasant day out and enjoyable round of golf.
