Some golf courses are spectacular, some go way beyond even that. The Scott Miller layout at the Coeur d’Alene Golf and Spa Resort is one of those courses. Located on the northern tip of Idaho, far away from the hustle and bustle of big city life, almost as far as you can go in United States without having to say ”Eh,” Coeur d’Alene is one of the last unspoiled outposts in a world gone crazy. It’s a land where pristine beauty, stillness, tranquility and quiet reign over all.

As golf courses go, Coeur d’Alene is not unknown to the golfing community. Its main claim to fame is its celebrated 14th hole, a par 3 of indeterminate length. Now what the heck is that supposed to mean? You may well ask. After all, it’s no more than a matter of measuring tee to green, taking into account the positions of the varying tee boxes, right? Well, yes, and no. The 14th at Coeur d’Alene is like no other. True, it’s an island green that somewhat resembles the famed 17th at Sawgrass, but there the resemblance ends. This green floats, like a boat, and it moves. In fact, it sails around Lake Coeur d’Alene, never to stay in one place for more that a day. And, of course, should you actually hit the green, you’ll need make sail yourself, for the green, that is. This hole comes with its own “Putter Boat.”

Now, golf may be your primary reason for visiting the Coeur d’Alene Resort, but once you arrive you’re sure to find a hundred reasons more to stay. Coeur d’Alene is “the Great Outdoors” personified. Nowhere, that I know of, will you find a more pristine environment: this is “Big Sky” country where the colors are more intense, the air heady and intoxicating, the views spectacular and the golf beyond compare.

The resort itself is a vast world of luxury, leisure and entertainment. It features an 18-story tower, 337 luxury rooms, seven restaurants, a sprawling marina, the magnificent Scott Miller golf course, and the world-class Spa Coeur d’Alene, named “The World’s Most Romantic Spa” in a special report for Sherman’s Travel newsletter.

As far away from most urban centers as it is, it makes sense to plan a visit of at least a week (the resort is almost 3,000 miles where I live in Tennessee). And there’s really no “best” time to go. Even during the winter months there’s plenty to see and do, including fishing and skiing.
