The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at Red Ledges Golf Club is by far the best new course I’ve visited in many a long month. They say it’s a classic risk/reward, Rocky Mountain layout that offers a challenge for players of every level of skill. Well, this is the second new Nicklaus design I've visited this year - the other was Dove Mountain in Tucson, the home of the Accenture WGC Tournament. And, while I love Dove Mountain, Jack has excelled himself with his innovated use of the dramatic natural terrain at Red Ledges, building an 8,000-yard course that features a new adventure at every turn.
Yep, what you see here is the view from the 1st tee. The landing area is way down there beyond the forced carry over the scrub. It's a fine beginning hole, a par 4 of just 427 yards from the back tee where this image was shot. Intimidating? Sure, but the landing area is more generous than it looks and from there you'll have but a short iron into the green. The green is undulating and not easy to read, but it runs fast and true. A par here means you're off to a great start to the round.
