The Arizona Grand Golf Course - part of the Phoenix Arizona Grand Resort - is not one of golf's longest tracts, though it has a reputation, at least among some, as "one of the most challenging resort courses in the Valley." The layout is not a new one, though the name is. Once known as Phantom Horse Golf Club on South Mountain, the award-winning layout has undergone a $2.5 million redesign and reopened for play as the Arizona Grand Golf Course in the fall of 2002. Perhaps the jewel in the Grand's crown is "Alcatraz," the inevitable island green on the 18th that seems to have become mandatory on every golf course - new or redesigned. So, take Alcatraz and add it to the famous 12th, the "Jailhouse Steps," and you certainly do have a couple of exciting golf holes to look forward to. As I said, the course is not long, just 6,300 yards from the tips for a par of 71. Yep, even from the back tees, many of the holes are well withing reach of mid to low handicappers, always provided that they pay close attention to club selection and accuracy.

The course wends its way through some Arizona's most spectacular scenery, . The beauty of South Mountain Park, a protected natural desert preserve, is dramatic; the elevation changes along the way, coupled with breathtaking mountain vistas, make for layout that's as diverse as it is challenging; and all of which can be seen from The Lobby Grill overlooking the first tee box area.
