San Antonio Texas may not be the first destination that jumps to mind when you're trying to figure out where to go for a few days of chasing the little white ball. It is, however, fast becoming a major national golf destination.
They say that "everything is bigger in Texas," and San Antonio is no exception. Now the seventh-largest city in the United States (hard to believe, but true), San Antonio is home to a variety of very fine courses, including traditional layouts (check out the lovely Brackenridge Park course, an original A.W. Tillinghast design), parkland courses, and beautiful golf resorts. Mild temperatures and more than 300 days of sunshine annually mean you can tee it up year-round - rain is but a "sometime thing" and rarely seems to last for more than a few hours. These are just a few reasons why San Antonio golf courses are a great choice for a few days of fun in the sun.
San Antonio is, in my opinion, unique among major American cities. True, most of the amenities you'll find here can also be found in abundance across the country, but shopping, dining, sightseeing and even golf aside, San Antonio has. something I've never experienced anywhere else. Maybe it's the history - there's certainly plenty of that - or maybe it's the laid-back approach to life that its population seems to have adopted one-and-all; or, maybe, it's all that and more. Whatever it is, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about the moment you step out onto the city's marvelous River Walk; the welcoming vibe is simply infectious.
On a strictly golf level, San Antonio boasts more than two dozen first-rate golf courses that are open to the public. These range from public/municipal layouts to some of the finest offerings in golf course design at some very high-end resorts; all have their own unique appeal. Better yet, the green fees are often just as attractive, even at the major resorts - compared to more celebrated golf destinations, that is. Add an abundant variety of shops, art galleries, malls, historic monuments and, of course, San Antonio's world-famous River Walk and the inimitable Texas landscape, and you have a golf destination that's second to none.
