The Republic Golf Club is a late addition to San Antonio’s roster of public access golf courses. It’s also a current qualifying site for the Senior U.S. Open. Built along the banks of the scenic Salado Creek, The Republic Golf Club is a quite tract of old-growth oaks trees, elms and mesquite trees.
Situated only minutes away from downtown San Antonio and its world famous Riverwalk, The Republic Golf Club offers a challenging round of golf on a layout designed not only test your game, but to provide a retreat from the everyday hustle and bustle of big city living.
The layout is relatively flat and close enough to the city to make it readily accessible to anyone with a set of sticks, but beyond the old-world facade of the clubhouse the abundance of trees that line the fairways provides a feeling of quite isolation. Wide fairways with generous landing areas, open approaches to fast, undulating greens strategically guarded by a phalanx of bunkers designed as much to intimidate as to defend the putting surfaces, and four sets of tees intended to provide even the high handicapper with an enjoyable round, make The Republic one of San Antonio’s must plays.
The day I visited the course the sun was shining and a gentle breeze was wafting across the fairways. It was one of those days when it feels good just to be alive. The course was in superb condition, which was a total surprise considering The Republic is a popular public course where the green fees are as reasonable as they are. I have played high-end private clubs that are not as well conditioned, or aesthetically pleasing as this one. How lucky we are to be able to enjoy such beautiful places.
The 18-hole Republic course plays 7,070 yards from the tips for a par of 71. Designed by Art Schaupeter, the course opened for play in 2002.
Green Fees: $61 on weekends; $49 on weekdays; $39-48 twilight fees; includes golf cart. Green fees are always subject to change. Please contact the resort for up-to-date information and tee times at (800) 446-5387.
