Sunningdale, located close to Ascot approximately 30 miles west of central London and 10 miles south west of Heathrow, is probably one of the most famous golf clubs in Britain. Its two magnificent golf courses, the scene of many international tournaments, including the Dunlop Masters, offer visitors the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the Gods.
Bobby Jones once said that he wished he could take the entire course back to America. And, in a way, he did: he took note, filed away his memories, and then incorporated them into Augusta National. Its no wonder that he had such fond memories of Sunningdale. His qualifying round in the Open championship of 1926 has been described as the perfect round of golf. His round of 33 shots and 33 putts for an incredible score of 66 is still counted among the all-time greatest rounds. And there have been other such notable rounds at Sunningdale. on the Old, a devastating 63 by Norman von Nida shot a magnificent 63 to win the Dunlop Masters; Gary Player shot a 64 that launched his career.
Sunningdale is blessed with two championship courses set amid the glorious English countryside. This part of old-world England is a land of lonely heaths, heather, gorse and pine and the play on both courses is both challenging and visually delightful.
The Old Course: 6,627 yards Par 70
Willie Park Junior was one of the leading golfers of his time. He won The Open in 1887 and 1889. As a golf course architect, he was designed some of Britains finest courses, including Sunningdale Old Course, which opened in 1901. Noted for its beauty and isolation, the layout is in total harmony with nature. Its a dramatic layout, exciting and thought to be one of the best-loved inland courses in England.
The New Course: 6,729 yards Par 70
Designed by Harry Colt, the New Course opened in 1923. Many of the members claim its the better of the two courses, and one has to suppose that they would know. Its a richly wooded course, different but complimentary to its more famous peer.
