Sand Hollow Resort Championship Golf Course enters the Golf Digest list of Best New Public Courses 2009 at number seven. Sand Hollow Resort is set deep among the red rocks in the foothills of Pine Valley Mountain just minutes away from downtown Hurricane in Southern Utah. This is not only golf country, it's a land of outdoor adventure, a surreal world of great natural beauty, of Zion National Park, the Hurricane sand dunes and Sand Hollow reservoir, all of which provide a spectacular back-drop for the new Sand Hollow Resort Championship Golf Course
The new Championship layout plays slightly more than 7,300 yards from the back tees incorporating dramatic elevation changes, natural sandstone ledges, and extraordinary rock outcroppings all of which provide one stunning vista after another. Add 18 lush green fairways and greens set in a bed of rich red sand and you have one extraordinary, eye-popping canvas, a palette that architect John Fought has utilized to its fullest advantage.
The layout follows the land's natural contours, integrating ridge-lines, canyons and variations in elevation that necessitate the use of every club in the bag. The greens are large, undulating, tough to read, and guarded by skillfully-placed bunkers filled with soft red sand; the landing areas generous, depending upon the choice of tee box, and Fought has provided four sets of tees to accommodate players of every level of skill.
According to GOLF Magazine, "John Fought has taken southwest Utah by storm with this superb layout." It goes on to say that the course's back nine is "a home run, with a four-hole stretch (holes 12 to 15) that rank among the most memorable in the West."
Fought, a former All-American golfer at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, says the Sand Hollow site "is like very few others in the world - it is the most natural site for a golf course built in many years."
The 18-hole Sand Hollow Championship course plays 7,315 yards from the tips for a par of 72. The course rating is 73.7 with a slope rating of 137. Designed by John Fought, ASGCA, the Sand Hollow Championship golf course first opened for play in 2008.
Green Fees: $65 to $125, depending upon the time of day and day of the week.
Where to Stay:
Hurricane is just a small community, thus the choices for accommodations are somewhat limited. There's a Super 8, Days Inn, Travelodge, etc., but I don't think you can go to far wrong if you opt for the Comfort Inn Zion. The rates are good and it's handy to the golf courses.
