The Tradition Golf Club at Stonehouse is situated just 15 miles from Colonial Williamsburg in an area of great natural beauty of virgin hardwoods, mountain laurels and old-growth hollies. It’s a land where white-tail deer and wild turkey roam freely among the forests that provide the backdrop for this spectacular golf course. The Tradition Golf Club at Stonehouse opened in 1996 to rave reviews: Golf Magazine named it the "Best New Upscale Public Course in the Nation" and one of the "Top New Ten You Can Play." In 2002 it was awarded 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest. Today, it holds a place in Golf magazine’s "Top 100 You Can Play."

The Course:

Designed by Mike Stranz, Traditions at Stonehouse is a tumultuous mountain course laid out over a vast tract of heavily forested hills of old-growth hardwood, mountain laurel, hollies, steep bluffs, plunging ravines, rocky ridges, and wide plateaus. From the longest tees, the layout plays 6,962 yards for a par of 71 – no, that’s not a mistake; the par is 71 – with a course rating of a whopping 75 and a slope of 140. Four sets of tees make the course playable, and enjoyable, for golfers of all levels of skill. From the shorter White tees, the course plays a manageable 6,111 yards for a par of 71 with a rating of 71.4 and a slope of 133.

Like a roller coaster, the tree-lined fairways take you up and down from one dramatic elevation change to the next. Long carries are punctuated by more than 100 bunkers. Putting greens are set upon cliff-tops with approaches that offer an enormous range of options. It’s a grand course and endless fun to play, if you’re scoring well. If not….

One hole, the 18th, is particularly memorable. An extremely tough par 4 of 453 yards, it requires a blind tee shot to a generous landing area. Sounds easy, right? Well, the problem is the shot also requires a carry of at least 200 yards and, to have any chance at the green with your second, it needs to land close to the right edge of the fairway. Easy enough when you can see the landing area, but blind? A row of four fairway bunkers guard the landing area and they do gather more than their fair share of wayward balls. If you do find right spot on the landing area, you’ll probably be faced with a long iron shot to a green with a narrow approach and guarded by bunkers left and right. Handicapped number 2, the 18th at Stonehouse is one tough finishing hole.

Green fees: Stonehouse is a public course. Fees range from $45 to $99 depending on the time of day and day of the week.

Where to Stay:

You might try the Holiday Inn Patriot in the heart of Williamsburg’s Historic Triangle. It’s close to Williamsburg's 10 championship golf courses, Busch Gardens historic Colonial Williamsburg. And, as always, you can rely on a certain standard of service offered at Holiday Inns.
